Welcoming Russell Hepplewhite

We’re thrilled to welcome award-winning composer Russell Hepplewhite to our Choral Now series with his atmospheric setting of Sara Teasdale’s poem ‘I know the stars’.

A haunting love-lyric by admired American poet Sara Teasdale (1884–1933), I know the stars has inspired a work of beautifully limpid vocal lines and rapt minimalist piano-patterns in an exquisite partnership of words and music. An ideal match for any quiet, reflective corner of a varied, thoughtfully planned programme, for ensembles small or large, it offers a perfect three minutes of contemplation through mantra-like simplicity of verse and setting, in an evocation of the cruelty of unrequited love that will hold both singers and audiences spellbound.
