Kelly, Bryan: Partita for Trombone and Piano

Standard: Intermediate

The Partita for trombone and piano is the latest example of Bryan Kelly’s genius for writing bright and idiomatic miniatures for a range of instruments. From the stately opening ‘Fanfare’, melodious ‘Song’ and sombre ‘Chorale Prelude’ to the genial ‘Burlesque’, and soulful ‘Envoi’, no aspect of this most characterful member of the brass family is neglected. Both treble clef and bass clef parts are included with the score. The five pieces of this new Partita will be attractive to all trombonists, especially to adventurous young players of around Grades 3 to 5 standard who are keen to explore new repertoire.

Partita is a new piece by Bryan Kelly aimed at adventurous trombone players of Grades 3 to 5. This five-part work has much to commend it, and I was particularly struck by the idiomatic trombone writing. The opening ‘Fanfare’ demonstrates the declamatory nature of the instrument well, and ‘Chorale Prelude’ will be familiar territory for trombonists who have experienced orchestral playing. ‘Song’ features a repeated lyrical motif and includes some muting, and the jolly ‘Burlesque’ lends some light relief. The piece rounds off with another slow and lyrical tune, ‘Envoi’. In these short movements Kelly has captured some of the instrument’s most appealing facets.
