Stanford, Charles V: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano Op.129 arr.Viola

Stanford’s Viola Sonata of 1911 was unavailable for many years, but is now reissued in a new engraving and revised edition by Professor John White. A richly melodious and romantic score in the tradition of the two Brahms sonatas for clarinet or viola, the sonata, which features a notable lament in dark, Celtic mood, framed by two expansive movements overflowing with the composer’s characteristic lyricism, is a major addition to the repertoire of viola players, whether recitalists, examination candidates or recording artists.
