Editor’s Note
In editing this work, fingering has been kept to a minimum: with music whose textures are largely contrapuntal, prescribed fingerings seem to me to be more a hindrance than a help. Harmonics are notated to sound at pitch, i.e. an octave lower than written. Two types of harmonic are distinguished — note-heads with small circles above or below are ‘natural’ harmonics, played on open strings, while diamond-shaped note-heads indicate ‘artificial’ harmonics. Note that it is sometimes necessary to play the open-string harmonics as artificial harmonics.
