Lennox Berkeley was born in 1903, and after leaving Oxford went to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger. His works include the opera Nelson, three one-act operas, the Latin Magnificat for chorus and orchestra, Stabat Mater and numerous chamber works. From 1946 until 1968 he was Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music.

His orchestral music often includes important parts for the harp, but this Nocturne, composed in 1967, is his first solo work for the instrument. It is a moderately easy piece, but needs skilful pedalling in one or two places.
