World War Two (1939–1945)
Words by Helen Eastman

CONCERT INTRODUCTION
It may surprise you to know that the Second World War could have gone on a lot longer than six years had it not been for just a few men and women who were working in huts 50 miles from London. They were brilliant mathematicians who cracked incredibly complicated secret enemy codes that concealed the positions of German submarines armed with deadly torpedoes in the Atlantic Ocean. Their warnings were then sent to the Royal Navy so that convoys could change course and arrive home safely with vital war supplies from America.

LYRICS

There’ll be a time when all this is over,
And the church bells will ring again,
A time when this is over
And the milkman sings again.
A time when this is over
And our brothers all come back.
But until then …

Black out the windows.
Pull down the blinds.
Cracking codes is our job.
Fighting with our minds.

We are searching for clues
To illuminate the dark,
We’re the code-cracking geeks of Bletchley Park.

tap, tap, tap, tap, tick, tick
Enigma, Enigma, Shhh, Shhh,
Enigma, Enigma, Shhh, Shhh,
A G B H C I D J
Shhh!
