Introduction

Give or take a few weeks, it is five years since we began our association with the National Youth Choir’s ‘Young Composers’ scheme, a collaboration that has allowed us the privilege of meeting and engaging with a whole group of immensely talented early-career musicians. When the Choir’s Artistic Director, Ben Parry, and Stainer & Bell’s Managing Director, Antony Kearns, initially met to explore areas of common interest and discuss a potential partnership, it was quite clear that the two organisations shared many of the same aspirations. Indeed, NYC’s stated aim for the scheme is one that Stainer & Bell wholeheartedly and unreservedly supports:

“The National Youth Choir Young Composers scheme supports composers in the early stages of their careers, who are committed to developing as professional composers and who have a passion for creating high-quality, imaginative new music for vocal ensembles. It is particularly designed to support emerging composers from a broad range of musical backgrounds and genres.”

So it was that Stainer & Bell became NYC’s ‘Publishing Partner & Innovation Grant Sponsor’, and we are delighted to now be part of a team of supporters, alongside NMC Recordings (Programme Digital Partner) and Steinberg Media Technologies / Dorico (Principal Innovation Sponsor) – together we can supplement the knowledge and experience of the wonderful NYC leaders and mentors in helping composers to develop key skills that will serve them well as they progress on their creative journey.

We invite you to visit our News page over the next few weeks as we catch up with the young composers who have passed through this inspiring scheme and reflect on the exciting pieces they wrote during their time with the NYC and which we are proud to publish. And what better date to present our first instalment than 8 March …
