Rhiannon Randle is one of the UK’s bright, emerging composers. Her choral composing career in particular was kick-started by a BBC Radio 3 commission for International Women’s Day 2015, Like a Singing Bird, published by Stainer & Bell, and her works for vocal ensemble have made a growing impact on singers and audiences since then. Encountered in challenging yet always singable scores, her distinctive compositional voice combines an intimate awareness of musical tradition with an original, contemporary twist, and has won praise from Sir James MacMillan for its ‘breadth of expression and boldness of communication … full of energy, snap and sparkle’. In recent years an impressive corpus of her a cappella pieces has been heard via broadcasts, on CD and through streaming services.
Also from 2015 and published by Stainer & Bell, On Life’s Dividing Sea was recorded by the BBC Singers and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. O Magnum Mysterium of 2016, commissioned for Choir & Organ magazine’s Contemporary Music Series, was recorded by Sansara on the Resonus Classics label. O Nata Lux of 2018, published by Boosey & Hawkes and recorded by the Zurich Chamber Singers on the Berlin Classics label, was not only nominated for the prestigious 2021 OPUS KLASSIK award for choral recording of the year, but was also featured on the Spotify official Classical Christmas playlist, with a monthly international reach of 100,000 listeners. Rejoice!, forthcoming from Boosey & Hawkes, was the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ 2020 annual carol commission; and Da Pacem Domine, also Boosey & Hawkes, was recorded on Regent Records by the Choir of St Michael’s, Cornhill, where Rhiannon is Composer-in-Residence.
In 2020, a fruitful collaboration with poet Malcolm Guite resulted in Rhiannon’s latest publication from Stainer & Bell, the anthem Our Burning World for SATB and organ, which addresses the response to the climate crisis. A distinctive theatrical talent, she has written three substantial one-act chamber operas, the third, Door of 2016, in association with the Royal Opera House. Her instrumental catalogue features a wide range of chamber works composed for ensembles including the Britten Sinfonia, the Heath Quartet and Psappha. Her orchestral commission Thy Presence, My Light, written for the 2021 St Endellion Easter Festival, transformed the hymn ‘Be Thou My Vision’ into a fantasia for performance by musicians at home during lockdown. Rhiannon is an undergraduate tutor at her alma mater Cambridge University and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she studied with Julian Anderson and Julian Philips, and graduated with distinction. She is also a professional violinist and soprano, and is an alumna of Trinity College Choir, Cambridge. rhiannonrandle.com
