Gerald Finzi (1901–1956)

Gerald Finzi was born in London on 14 July 1901 and when the family moved to Yorkshire during the First World War he studied music privately with Ernest Farrar and subsequently Edward Bairstow. Noted as possessing an introspective personality, Finzi had a deep love of English literature and relished the challenge of setting complex poetry by writers such as Vaughan, Traherne, Milton, Wordsworth, and Hardy that many other composers were wary of taking on.

The three works in the Stainer & Bell catalogue are his earliest published choral pieces, with each displaying a vivid range of expression from tender and lyrical beauty to dramatic and powerful declamation.
