Edward Cuthbert Bairstow (1874–1946)

Edward BairstowOne of the twentieth-century’s outstanding organist-composers, – ‘The English César Franck’.

Bairstow’s career spanned the whole strata of provincial musical life from choral society to music festival, and encompassed organ playing, writing, teaching, conducting, accompanying, lecturing, composing and adjudicating as well as looking after the busy musical life of York Minster where he served as Organist and Master of the Choristers from 1913 until his death in 1946.
