Back to Berners Street: A Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea Celebration

On Tuesday 3rd December the Stainer & Bell ‘family’ had a wonderful retirement celebration for outgoing Managing Director Carol Wakefield and her husband (and our Chairman) Keith Wakefield.

When Stainer & Bell was founded on 2nd December 1907, our first office was located at 28 Berners Street, London. However, by 1912 we had outgrown the space and we moved along the street to number 58, where we remained until 1950.

Today, the beautiful Sanderson Hotel – formerly the Sanderson showroom (renowned supplier of wallpaper, fabrics and paint) – resides next door to number 58. So what better location for a significant S&B celebration? This was especially fitting as Carol’s great-grandfather, Ellis Howard, began working for Stainer & Bell in Berners Street in 1912.

In typically quirky S&B fashion, we celebrated with a fabulous Champagne ‘Mad Hatter’s’ Afternoon Tea – including King of Hearts Ham and Parmesan Croque-Monsieur, Queen of Hearts Rose and Strawberry Jammy Dodgers, Mad March Hare Vanilla Pocket Watch Macaroons and Alice-inspired tea infusions.

The Sanderson, their staff and the truly delicious and imaginative Afternoon Tea comes with our highest recommendation!

We all expressed our huge thanks to Carol and Keith for their remarkable service and dedication to the company for over four decades, and wished them all the very best for a long, healthy and happy retirement.
